But It’s A Twinkie

“I don’t like Twinkies, I can’t stand them, I mean I see a Twinkie and I just want to squish it in my hands and throw it,” says 29-year-old “Selena”, an employee at a local retail giant who also says that this started when she was about 10 yrs old. “It’s the texture, I think, I can’t stand it,” states Selena.

To some, this delightful spongy creme-filled sweet pastry is a walk down memory lane, a time forgotten, but one bite will take you back. Its creator, James Alexander Dewar was a driver for Continental Baking Co., delivering strawberry pound cakes and it was quite interesting because it wasn’t a car, it was a horse-drawn carriage. The idea came from a business trip to St. Louis, while there he noticed a billboard with the words “Twinkle Toe Shoes,” and from there the idea of the word “Twinkie” was created, shortened up for the kiddos. The factory for the pound cakes needed something more because during downtime when strawberries weren’t in the season many of the pans for the pound cakes were left “idle” as Mr. Dewar so put it. During these times it was extremely hard for many people throughout the country as the Great Depression had hit and Mr. Dewar wanted something everyone could afford, enjoy, and was fun. Therefore, his newfound idea for “Twinkie” sparked a new wave of enjoyment and affordability. Even creating more use out of the pans as well.

The first attempt for the cream filling was banana and it didn’t go so well or wasn’t popular enough to generate a big demand or increase in revenue. So later white cream filling, pretty much sugar was injected into the spongy substance and eventually became a huge hit and it stayed. Nowadays or on certain holidays or events, you have flavor fillings and or colorings, but overall, it’s pretty neat. Now Hostess owns the rights and development to the Twinkie. Currently, there have been some changes to the investment groups and more to help with the financial crisis of the so-called Twinkie. Let’s just hope that the Twinkie is here to stay and by the way, does anyone know how long a Twinkie is good for? And, did the Twinkie shrink down in size? Until then everyone, let’s keep those Twinkies going.
