Discovering William Penn University: A Journey into Diversity and Inclusivity

In my recent travels, I experienced a dramatic shift in climate as I ventured beyond my familiar Texan surroundings to the chilly temperatures of Iowa, hovering around 16 degrees. This stark contrast to the warmth of home served as a sharp awakening, yet it led me to an exciting new role as an editor for a nonprofit bilingual community newspaper. Our publication, which circulates 15,000 copies weekly and 60,000 monthly, strives to inform and engage our diverse readership.

One of our latest assignments took us to William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where we aimed to delve into the distinctive character of this inclusive and diverse institution. My anticipation for this journey kept me awake the night before, a mix of excitement and nerves compounded by the sleep deprivation I’d underestimated. Nevertheless, I set out with determination, eager to explore the university firsthand.

Interacting with students, faculty, and local dignitaries at William Penn provided a deeper understanding of the university’s ethos. The palpable camaraderie and mutual respect among the students and professors left a lasting impression, highlighting the institution’s unique and supportive atmosphere.

For anyone considering their educational future, I highly recommend exploring William Penn University. Take the time to visit their website, explore their offerings, and perhaps reach out for more information. The time spent navigating San Antonio traffic is a small price to pay for the potential benefits of discovering such a remarkable institution. My visit mirrored the experiences of many students who find a nurturing environment and genuine support within William Penn’s welcoming embrace. Despite the chilly weather and distance from home, the campus offers a serene and supportive environment ideal for academic pursuits.

The tranquility of William Penn University’s campus starkly contrasts with the bustling cityscape of Oskaloosa, yet the potential for exploration and discovery is abundant. Curiosity about the term “Quaker” and its significance to the university is common. Founded in 1873 as Penn College and later renamed to honor the esteemed Quaker William Penn, the university upholds Quaker values such as equality and social justice (1). These principles resonate deeply within the institution’s ethos.

William Penn University stands as a testament to diversity, cultural richness, and unwavering Quaker ideals. It continues to celebrate inclusivity and academic excellence with a diverse student body and faculty. Importantly, one does not need to follow Quakerism to be part of this vibrant community. The university offers a unique experience for everyone, grounded in the values of equality and support.
